The Marillion Weekends in Wolverhampton and Montréal have concluded recently. Reading all Marillion’s fans comments on Facebook as they described their 3-night-gig experience pulled at my heartstrings. What a thrill it was seeing a real “Map of the world” at the Wolves’ gig! People’s love for the band in Montréal was nothing but amazing! I regret that I missed both, but my heart was there, thanks to people from all over the world using the power of social networks and sharing their experiences. Fortunately, I had been in Port Zélande [it] (the first of this years weekends), and have been to every one there since 2009 😉
Do you think it’s quite strange speaking of Marillion on a hotel blog? Nope, we are not the kind of hotel you may imagine! My wife Anna and I have been running this small hotel in Italy for thirty years…hey, the Hotel Rudy is as old as Misplaced Childhood, what a coincidence! Or should I call it synchronicity? 😀
Let’s me spend a few words to introduce to you the Hotel Rudy, a 3-star-hotel in the Adriatic Riviera, located directly by the sea, nearby the amazing pine forest of Cervia. Since the Rudy is a seasonal hotel, during the year we usually have enough spare time to follow Marillion on tour. Anna and I have known the band since 1993 and it was love at first listen.
During the off-peak season, we usually carry out improvements to the hotel in order to increase guests satisfaction. We just installed a new elevator that goes to the third floor and the interior walls have also been redecorated. While painting, I had the crazy idea of making a wall mural [it] from the seminal album in a lot of people’s eyes that is Brave, using the cover as a basis. Pretty cool, eh? Unfortunately, Anna disagreed…so, no Brave cover mural on the Rudy’s walls…so far 😉
But how did the craziness start?
Well, in the beginning it was only our wish to sharing with other fans the passion for the amazing music of Marillion. There are a lot of Marillion fans who are pretty good musicians and they usually play their own music as well as covers. Bittersuite, Silver Key, Adriatics, Neverland, Davide Marani (with his Marillion Acoustic Project) are some of the bands that have performed live at The Web Italy Convention in the course of time. Trust me, just thinking about these experiences leaves me with a really overwhelming flood of memories and emotions!
But the momentous event was when Steve Hogarth, Steve Rothery and Pete Trewavas came to play in Cervia for the TWI Convention in 2009. Do you want to know what’s like to be part of the Italian Convention? Taste the real Cervia Convention’s mood having a look to what happened in 2009 (sorry, Italian only).
Yep, we are a real family and Steve Rothery must have thought it too, since he has become a regular guest at The Web Italy’s Conventions, along with RanestRane, an Italian progressive rock band that writes concept albums inspired by art movies.
RanestRane are old friends of The Web Italy: their first appearance at the Italian Convention was in 2010, when the band performed a preview of “Shining”, inspired by Stanley Kubrick’s movie of the same name. In 2011, RanestRane executed the entire first album “Nosferatu, il Vampiro”, (based on Walter Herzog’s movie). The following year, RanestRane played their new album “A Space Odyssey – Part I: Monolith”, featuring Steve Rothery. Do you want to know more about RanestRane? Don’t worry, I will speak soon more extensively about these amazing guys 😉
Meanwhile, suffice to say that during the TWI Convention 2015, just concluded, RanestRane offered fans a preview of their new album, H.A.L.
H.A.L. is the second part of A Space Odyssey’s trilogy, inspired by the Kubrick’s masterpiece. The core of the album is the interaction between the artificial intelligence Hal 9000, that controls the systems of the Discovery One spacecraft, and the ship’s astronaut crew, during the interplanetary mission to Jupiter.
Riccardo Romano, keyboardist and arranger of RanestRane, revealed that the new album would be a largely instrumental one, “the most heterogeneous album we’ve come up with so far, a thorough and painstaking work which was a long time in gestation”.
What a gig! Let me just say that RanestRane’s new album really goes beyond my highest expectations! May I suggest buying your copy of H.A.L. as soon as it will be released? 😀
But all the show was amazing! Steve Rothery loved playing again with RanestRane and performed a set of Marillion classics along with Alessandro Carmassi from Neverland and Enrico Mammana from Bittersuite (two of the Marillion Tribute Bands officially approved by The Web Italy) and Fabrizio Zortea from Tag My Toe.
What can I say more?
Thank you to The Web Italy for choosing once again Cervia and the Hotel Rudy. See you next year, guys!
